Pet Orthopedics with Board-Certified Surgeons
At Park Grove Pet Hospital, we are dedicated to providing pets of Cottage Grove and the surrounding areas with the highest quality care possible. Sometimes, that means bringing in specialists to help us with more advanced and complex cases. For pet orthopedics, we bring in board-certified mobile veterinary surgeons through Minnesota Mobile Veterinary Surgery. Drs. Brian and Nate Rose are highly experienced in a wide variety of orthopedic procedures.
Common Orthopedic Surgeries
Orthopedic surgery refers to any procedure on the bones or joints. These surgeries are often more intensive and require a longer recovery time for your pet. As an AAHA-accredited animal hospital, we use the safest measures to ensure we minimize your pet’s discomfort and set a foundation for a faster, smoother recovery. Common pet orthopedics our veterinary surgeons perform include:
- Fracture repairs
- TPLO (tibial plateau leveling osteotomy) for cranial cruciate ligament injuries
- FHO (femoral head ostectomy) for hip dysplasia
- Patella luxation repairs
- And more!
Recovery from Orthopedic Surgery
Orthopedic surgery requires a longer recovery time due to the intensive nature of surgery. When your pet is ready for discharge, we’ll send you home with detailed instructions as well as appropriate pain medication to ease their discomfort and antibiotics to reduce the chance of infection. For orthopedic surgery, we recommend:
- Crate rest for the first few weeks
- Limited activity for up to 16 weeks after surgery
- Diet reduction to avoid putting on extra weight during this down time.
- Minimizing the distance your pet has to go to relieve themselves
Depending on your pet’s surgery and their recovery progress, we may give you physical therapy exercises you can do with them at home to help strengthen their stability and increase mobility faster.
